"Nos tempos do imperador" is a Brazilian telenovela written by Thereza Falcão and Alessandro Marson for Rede Globo. It's an original story and it aired from August 9, 2021 to February 4, 2022.
Synopsis[]
In 1856, Emperor Dom Pedro II lives a marriage of appearances with Teresa Cristina, whom he was forced to marry at a young age due to the political alliance of his parents, having with her two daughters: Isabel and Leopoldina. He truly loves Countess Luísa, a cultured woman ahead of her time, who fights for the abolitionist cause and for women's rights, married to Eugenio, cousin of the emperor. The biggest beneficiary of the discovery of the affair is Tonico, a mean-spirited politician who plans to turn the people against Dom Pedro II to carry out a coup for the republic.
Alongside, there are the sisters Pilar and Dolores: the first went to a convent after her mother's death and grew up with a fine education, while the second stayed at home to take care of her father, Colonel Eudoro, growing up repressed, illiterate and without vanity. Upon returning home and discovering that she was betrothed to Tonico, Pilar runs away and falls in love with the slave Jorge, who cannot even imagine being the illegitimate son of Colonel Ambrósio and Tonico's half-brother. With the escape, Dolores is given in marriage to Tonico in Pilar's place, suffering several mistreatments for being considered "ugly" by him, who does not give up obsessively pursuing Pilar. The couple is still hampered by Zayla, who also likes Samuel and is willing to do anything to harm her rival.
Coffee growers Lota and Batista dream of moving up in life and, for that, they use their children: the ambitious Nélio, who is Tonico's henchman and takes advantage of it, and sweet Bernardo, whose parents want to force him to seduce Isabel or Leopoldina into royalty, although he loves Lupita, without imagining that she is his father's lover. There's also Germana and Licurgo, a comical couple of hustlers, who live on behalf of the Taberna dos Porcos, now run by Quinzinho. Zayla's parents, Cândida and Olu, founded the neighborhood of Pequena África, which welcomes freed slaves to give them the opportunity to grow.
Trivia[]
- Initially the telenovela's premiere date was in September 2019, replacing 'Órfãos da terra'. In January of that year, however, it was announced that the production had changed places with Éramos seis, who would be its replacement, and transferred to the first half of 2020, as the production faced difficulties in adapting the historical facts to the plot. Subsequently, the release date was announced for March 30, 2020 and the trailer was released on February 27. However, the launch was canceled due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil and later postponed to August 9, 2021. On July 12, 2021, TV Globo again announced the debut of the plot with a second trailer for August 9 of the same year.
- Emilio Dantas was initially confirmed in the main role, as well as Andreia Horta in the role of his wife Teresa Cristina. Both were later transferred to other projects.
- Although several characters from 'Novo mundo' were brought back in its sequel, they were all played by other actors. Vivianne Pasmanter and Guilherme Piva were the only actors who reprised their original roles from 'Novo mundo'.
- Due to the pandemic, Vera Holtz and Luís Melo, who had already recorded several scenes as Lota and Batista, asked to leave the cast fearing contagion, so both were replaced with Paula Cohen and Ernani Moraes. The Portuguese-Angolan actor Hoji Fortuna, would play Dom Olu, but was replaced without explanation by Rogério Brito.
